North East Win for Graves22nd June 2009
Phil Graves has added to his gold medal in the Ironman 70.3, with victory at the British Triathlon National Standard Distance Triathlon Championships in Druridge Bay Country Park, Northumberland this weekend. Despite the inevitable tiredness from the event his last race, Phil managed to maintain his form and led coming out of the water. It was an impressive first leg, as Phil established a 1:24 lead over his rivals and further extended the gap between himself and the rest of the field on the bike. Recording the quickest time on the second leg, the man from Yorkshire eased into the final leg to finish the race with a time of 1:49.17, 2:38 ahead of runner-up James Third with 1:51.55. The gap between second and third was also significant with Third finishing 1:45 ahead of Thomas Sturdy at 1:53.40. In the female race, victory went to Jill Parker who continued her impressive form of recent weeks. Parker had previously taken a surprise silver medal in the third race of the British Triathlon Super Series and she came up trumps again in Northumberland finishing with 2:07.23. Runner-up in the competition was Eimear Mullan just under one minute behind Parker finishing with 2:08.22. The final podium placing fell to Juliet Vickery who crossed the line at 2:10.30.
