British clean sweep in T100 Miami Women’s Race

Published:

The inaugural T100 race took place this weekend as Clash Endurance Miami saw India Lee take top spot on the women’s podium which she shared with fellow Brits Lucy Charles-Barclay and Holly Lawrence.

The racing got underway with a 2km swim in which Charles-Barclay demonstrated her world-renowned skills in the water alongside compatriot Lucy Buckingham.

The two Lucy’s had a 52-second lead coming out of the water, however Lee was in hot pursuit and cut this down to 30 seconds by the halfway point of the 80km bike leg. Buckingham, who had been ill prior to the event, was forced to pull out as Charles-Barclay stormed off the front.

With Lee continuing to close at the front she was also creating a healthy gap to the Brit-dominated chase group of Holly Lawrence, Kat Matthews, Lucy Byram and Paula Findlay of Canada.

T2 saw Charles-Barclay and Lee’s advantage stand at 02:40, with the former edging a narrow lead in the early stages of the 18km run.

With just over half the run leg remaining, Lee closed her down and created a decisive lead of her own. Further back, Lawrence had pulled clear to make a British 1-2-3.

The first of the eight-race series, Lee secured the maximum 35 points, Charles-Barclay 28 points and Lawrence 25.

In the men’s race, Alistair Brownlee and David McNamee were the Brits on the start line and it was the two-time Olympic champion who was near the front through the swim.

Brownlee and France’s Mathis Margirier set the early pace on the bike, before being joined by Magnus Ditlev (NOR) and Sam Laidlow (FRA) to create a leading quartet in T2.

Heading out onto the run Brownlee was the sole Brit left in the race as McNamee dropped out of the race. As the 18km final leg of the race progressed the former Olympic Champion dropped away from the leaders eventually finishing fifth.

His fifth placed finish earnt Brownlee 20 points.

The T100 Triathlon World Tour continues on 13-14 April in Singapore.
