British Triathlon updates safeguarding guidance for clubs and coaches working with children and young people

Published:

British Triathlon has contacted all its clubs and coaches in the last few weeks to advise them of its new guidance when working with children and young people.

The Supervision Requirements for Children and Young People document strengthens existing guidance and reinforces the need to ensure all children and young people can enjoy swim, bike, run and triathlon activities safely.

Amy Hall, Head of Children and Young People for British Triathlon, said: “Thank you to all of our clubs and coaches who have been in touch with us regarding our recently reviewed guidance. We know our triathlon community has the safety and wellbeing of children and young people at the heart of everything they do and appreciate the feedback and comments we have received.

“We have pulled together all the key questions we have received and created a ‘frequently asked questions’ page which we hope will be useful to clubs and coaches that have not shared their queries with us as yet.”

The impact of the Whyte Review resonated widely in the sports sector, firmly recognising that the duty of care towards athletes, participants, coaches and leaders is the responsibility of the National Governing Bodies.

Amy adds: “British Triathlon considers the safety and wellbeing of children, young people, coaches, leaders and activators as central to our strategy, vision and values. As the National Governing Body for triathlon we are responsible for providing guidance and support for the swim, bike, run and triathlon community to ensure the sport is fun and safe for all involved.”

The Supervision Requirements for Children and Young People builds on findings of the Whyte Review, incorporating best practice guidelines from the NSPCC and recommendations from the British Triathlon independent Safeguarding review.
