Brownlee brothers win gold and silver in Glasgow

Published:

Olympic Champion Alistair Brownlee won Commonwealth Gold in Glasgow with a supreme performance in Strathclyde Park. Younger brother, Jonathan, won a brilliant silver medal ahead of Richard Murray (RSA) in bronze.

The Brownlee brothers made it a tough 1500m swim, dictating the pace and stretching out the field. When they got onto the bike only Scotland’s Marc Austin was with them. The twenty-year-old world junior silver medallist rode with them until the fourth of five bike laps.

At the second transition Alistair and Jonathan had a lead of just over a minute on the rest of the field having worked the tough, hilly 40km bike course hard in the heat. Running together initially, Alistair soon pushed the pace and ran the majority of the 10km alone.

At the finish he had time to pick up English and Yorkshire flags, give high-fives to the crowd and smile from ear-to-ear on the finishing line, much like he did when he won the Olympic title in London two years ago.

Alistair said: “It was fantastic today, I really enjoyed it. Jonny was brilliant. We had Marc Austin for company for most of the bike but I think he was working pretty hard. I never thought it would only be a group of three away… and he did pretty well.”

Delighted with the gold medal, he added: “This is the goal that I wanted to achieve for the season and I’ve done it now. The support we get is just brilliant. We were getting lots of cheers from Yorkshire and Scottish accents alike I think.”

Jonathan said: “I’m pleased with second, that’s all I had. It was really hard. We swam very very hard, we biked a two-up time trial, so I came off the bike absolutely shattered. It was a contract to London completely, where we were fresh and it was a fast run.”

He added: “I’ve completed the whole set now in triathlon, of medals, not winning because Alistair’s got that. I’m very pleased with that, commonwealth silver, Olympic bronze and World Champion, that’s great.”

Aaron Harris delivered an impressive sixth place finish after making his major Games debut.

The success of the Brownlee brothers came on top of Jodie Stimpson’s gold medal performance earlier today. Vicky Holland also won bronze, ensuring that the Team England Mixed Relay will be very tough to beat on Saturday.
