Stanford treads golden path to victory in Cape Town

Published:

Non Stanford became the third British women in three years to win the Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town. Jodie Stimpson bounced back from disappointment to secure silver over the sprint distance course.

Flora Duffy (BER) was the early leader with some clever tactics during the swim that saw her take a different line to the rest of the field. She held her lead throughout the bike leg, but had a chase pack headed by Jodie Stimpson and Non Stanford just behind her.

Making decisive starts to the run, Stanford, Stimpson and Vicky Holland got into a small group with Duffy and Anne Haug (GER). As the 5km run progressed, Stanford eased into a lead and became the third British woman in three years to win in Cape Town.

Stanford, who was starting her 2016 season, said: “I came here to see where I was, and I think everything is on track. I’m definitely not in my ideal race shape, so it means there is more to come, which is exciting.”

Stimpson looked focussed throughout the race, particularly through the second transition. Having not performed at her best during the Olympic assessment race on the Gold Coast two weeks ago, she bounced back in style.

She said: “I didn’t expect anything from this race. It’s been a tough couple of weeks, so I’m ecstatic to come here and make the podium.”

With Britain’s three Olympic slots having been filled, Stimpson will likely focus on a first ITU world title. She currently lies second in the Series rankings and added: “That would be a nice goal, to have a good performance in the overall Series this year.”

Vicky Holland, who met automatic qualification for Rio alongside Stanford last season, was sixth.

The men’s race takes place later this afternoon, featuring Jonathan Brownlee and Adam Bowden.
