Jodie Stimpson and Alistair Brownlee win top awards at British Triathlon Awards Evening

Published:

Commonwealth Champions, Jodie Stimpson and Alistair Brownlee have been announced as joint winners of the prestigious Olympic Athlete of the Year award presented at the annual British Triathlon Awards Evening, hosted at Loughborough University on Friday evening (14 November 2014).

Both athletes competed for Team England at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games with Jodie Stimpson hitting the headlines winning the first medal of the Games closely followed by Alistair Brownlee adding Commonwealth gold to his Olympic gold medal won at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Alongside winning the Olympic Athlete of the Year award, both athletes were named British Triathlon Elite Triathletes of the Year.

Stimpson won the opening two rounds of the ITU World Triathlon Series in Auckland and Cape Town as well as finishing fourth in the world-rankings. This season, Alistair Brownlee won the European title as well as the season finale at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Edmonton.

Upon receiving his award, Alistair Brownlee commented: “Thank you very much. It’s been a good season and it’s always good to get some awards at the end of it, a bit of recognition. It’s not really what you do it for, you do it to win races and be the best athlete you can be, but it’s always nice to be recognised as well.”

Alistair’s highlight was the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as he continued: “It was definitely the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow that was my big aim for the year. Like any big aim, it’s always good to cross the line and pull it off. The Grand Final was the icing on the cake; it was really nice to have a good race there as well.”

Tonight also celebrated the achievements of Britain’s leading elite paratriathletes with Phil Hogg and Lauren Steadman collecting the British Triathlon Elite Paratriathlete of the Year awards.

Phil Hogg (PT1) was named British Triathlon Male Paratriathlete of the Year thanks to two silver medal performances at the ETU European and ITU World Championships with Lauren Steadman (PT4) celebrating the British Triathlon Female Paratriathlete of the Year award in what has been a breakthrough year for the PT4 paratriathlete.

Lauren, who also won the Peter Holmes Award for Inspirational Performance in International Competition, commented: “I am shocked, it feels fantastic. This is an award that goes to the best of the best and for me to win, it means the world.”

Lauren’s highlight of the year was the ITU World Paratriathlon Event in London closely followed by the ITU Paratriathlon Championships in Edmonton. Lauren continued: “London was a major turning point for me, beating Faye is a really hard challenge as she is a fierce competitor. Crossing the line in Edmonton at the World’s with my whole family watching, it was just a fantastic atmosphere and with all the hard work this year, it was just beautiful.”
The evening also recognised Britain’s talented youngsters and leading elite duathletes including the winner of the Male Junior Triathlete of the Year, Youth Olympic Games Champion, Ben Dijkstra and Female Elite Duathlete of the Year, former world champion cyclist and Olympic medal winner Emma Pooley. Tim Don and Jodie Swallow were named British Triathlon Elite Long Distance Triathletes of the Year.

Alongside the sport’s elite winners - all of whom were voted for by members of the Home Nations - awards were also presented to Britain’s leading age-group triathletes and the volunteers, officials and coaches who underpin the delivery of our sport via the Leigh Day British Triathlon Workforce Awards.
