Hollyoaks Star Joins Triathlon Beginners ahead of Tri Liverpool

Published:

With less than a week to go until Tri Liverpool entries close on July 6, Hollyoaks star, Karl Collins, joined novice triathletes for a free open water swim session ahead of the spectacular event coming to Liverpool on July 26.

Collins, who plays Louis Loveday in the Channel 4 soap, has been confirmed as an ambassador for Tri Liverpool. Along with thousands of other entrants, he will take on the Sprint section of the event, which includes a 750m swim, 20k cycle and 5k run alongside some of the City’s most iconic waterfront landmarks on July 26.

Speaking about Tri Liverpool, Karl Collins said:

“Entering and training for triathlon events is a great way for anyone to keep up their fitness levels. For me personally, being back in the public eye with Hollyoaks means I’m conscious I want to look my best on screen. Entering Tri Liverpool has given me something to focus on, so I maintain my fitness levels. I’m really looking forward to it!”

Collins is a new addition to the soap playing the deputy headteacher of Hollyoaks High School since March of this year. Previous to Hlollyoaks, he enjoyed five years playing DC Danny Glaze in long running ITV series The Bill.

Based in London, Karl commutes to Liverpool and added:

“Liverpool has really welcomed me with open arms. It is a beautiful city, full of energy and very welcoming. The people are so friendly here.”

Collins joined over 30 first-time triathletes at Liverpool Watersports Centre, with many entering the dock waters for the first time. The session, delivered by Mersey Tri, in partnership with British Triathlon, allowed entrants to experience swimming in a wetsuit in the dock waters, ahead of Tri Liverpool. ”The open water swim bit can be quiet nerve wracking for those who haven’t done it before. It’s been great to meet other entrants here at the open water swim and watch them try it out for the first time.” Added Collins.

Jon Ridgeon, British Triathlon’s director for major and national events, said:

“In addition to hosting the elite British Triathlon Championships, Tri Liverpool has a clear aim of engaging people who have no triathlon experience. In partnership with Liverpool City Council, we have been working on raising awareness of triathlon as a sport and making it as inclusive as possible for people in Liverpool. Events like this open water swim taster session act as a dress rehearsal for beginners, and break down those mental barriers about entering the water. Entries to Tri Liverpool so far suggest a large percentage of first timers and also a greater number of women taking on Tri Liverpool, compared to previous years.”

Karl Collins added:

“I’ve participated in a couple of triathlons before but none with a course like Liverpool. It will be a great event for my family and friends to come to, with lots to see, experience and enjoy. I think they’re looking forward to watching the elite athletes and also taking in the sights of Liverpool on the day too.”

Cabinet member culture and tourism, councilor Wendy Simon said:

“Liverpool City Council is working in partnership with British Triathlon to ensure that Tri Liverpool is a must-do and must-see event in the city. The course takes in some of Liverpool’s most recognised landmarks, making it a really great day out, not only for entrants, but sports enthusiasts and supporters too. We look forward to hosting the British Triathlon Championships at Tri Liverpool on July 26.”

Entries for Tri Liverpool close on Monday July 6 in all categories, with the event taking place at the Echo Arena on Sunday July 26. Places can be booked online at www.TriLiverpool.com with entrants enjoying a 10% discount on entry by using code TRI10 online.
