Stimpson and Brownlee feature in World Triathlon Cape Town

Published:

The ITU World Triathlon Series makes its first ever visit to Cape Town, South Africa this weekend. The second stop of the 2014 Series will see Britain’s Jodie Stimpson ranked number one following her win in the previous round in Auckland.

Helen Jenkins continues her return to international racing, which saw her finish third in Auckland having not raced since August 2012. Jonathan Brownlee will resume his rivalry with Javier Gomez in the men’s race. However, Alistair Brownlee is a late withdrawal through injury.

Saturday’s women’s race sees Stimpson in pole position and Helen Jenkins ranked third. Lucy Hall, Vicky Holland and Lois Rosindale join them on the start line and Katie Hewison begins her triathlon season having missed Auckland.

In the men’s race Gomez is ranked number one following his Auckland win and Jonathan Brownlee is ranked second. Matt Sharp, Mark Buckingham, Aaron Harris and Gordon Benson join him, with Benson making his Series debut having finished on the podium at the recent ETU European Cup event in Quarteria, Portugal.

Olympic Champion, Alistair Brownlee misses Cape Town with a calf strain, but is expected to race the next round of the Series in Yokohama.

The flat course profile in Cape Town will make this a very different race to Auckland. Athletes will complete a 1500m quay swim followed by a 40km bike ride along the coast and 10km run.

South African athletes Richard Murray and Henri Schoeman are expected to make an impact in their home race. Gwen Jorgensen (USA) should also be amongst the favourites in the women’s race. She crashed during the Auckland bike leg but recovered to record by far the fastest run split.

The women’s race takes place at 3pm on Saturday 26 April and the men’s race is at 3pm on Sunday – (both races start at 2pm UK time, for TV timings click here.)
