Bank holiday medals for British athletes

There was no holiday for British athletes this weekend with racing taking place on the World Triathlon, Europe Triathlon, Challenge, Triathlon Bundesliga and IRONMAN circuits.

World Triathlon Championship Series Cagliari

Sardinia hosted the next round of the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) on Saturday, with Great Britain having a strong contingent on the start line. 

In the men’s race, Alex Yee out sprinted Hayden Wilde to take a familiar position on the top step of the WTCS Cagliari podium. Read the full report here

Europe Triathlon Cup Olsztyn

Four British men lined up in Poland for this sprint distance race, with Jack Willis finishing the race the fastest of them in fifth place. 

Less than a minute behind, Joe Sherman finished in 21st as a steady stream of athletes crossed the line. Compatriot Oscar Rogers was the next up in 22nd with Cameron Main the final Brit in 35th. 

In the women’s race, Iona Miller, Sophia Green and Annabel Morton represented Great Britain in Olsztyn. 

Green and Miller were amongst the first athletes out of the water, with the pair maintaining their positions at the front to finish sixth for Miller and tenth for Green. Morten registered a DNF on the bike. 

Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Olsztyn

As well as the senior racing in Poland, Olsztyn hosted junior cup action in which Great Britain was represented in the men’s race by Oliver Conway and Tom Dixon. 

Having both set good times on the swim, Conway performed well across the bike and run legs to come home with a bronze medal. Dixon meanwhile recorded a DNF on the run. 

IRONMAN 70.3 Kraichgau

The Kraichgau region of south west Germany welcomed IRONMAN athletes for a half IRONMAN distance race this weekend. 

Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Jess Learmouth continued her return to action by securing a silver medal behind German athlete Laura Philipp in the Pro Women’s race, sharing the podium with another home athlete in Laura Jansen who finished third. 

In the Pro Men’s race, Joshua Lewis finished sixth, just over two minutes off the podium. The race win was taken by Dutch athlete Niek Heldoorn. 

Triathlon Bundesliga

Kraichgau also played host to German Triathlon Bundesliga racing. 

Ben Cumberland was the lead Brit finishing seventh. Reuben Trotter joined him in the top-20 coming 18th. Oliver Turner was 25th with Thomas Hattee coming 33rd. Callum Stedman was the final Brit over the line in 47th.

Challenge St Polten

The Challenge season continued in St Polten, the capital city of lower Austria. 

The women's race saw Chloe Sparrow lead out of the water before she put in top five times across the bike and run legs to win a silver medal, just 40 seconds off race winner Laura Zimmerman of Germany. 

In the men's race Will Draper raced his way through the field to secure a bronze medal after coming out of the water in 18th.
