Olympic Silver medallist shows no Rio hangover as he delivers a master class performance in Karlovy Vary for a first career ETU European Cup win

Great Britain’s two-time Olympic medallist Jonathan Brownlee kept himself busy at the weekend by racing the Karlovy Vary ETU Triathlon Premium European Cup in the Czech Republic, just ten days after his Silver medal winning efforts alongside Copacabana Beach.

With a key race for his ambitions to be ITU World Champion for the second time coming up at the World Triathlon Series in Edmonton this coming weekend, Brownlee demonstrated his class by coming home to a winning margin of more that four minutes. Part of a leading group of three athletes after the opening 1.5km swim, Brownlee and Anthony Pujades (FRA) extended their lead over the multi-lap bike course featuring challenging hills and cobbles, which has been used in years past to host the ETU Triathlon European Championships.

Gaining a few extra seconds over Pujades in the late stages of the bike leg, Brownlee was in a class of his own on the run. He can now focus on Edmonton, confident that he hasn’t left all of his form and fitness in Brazil. Such was the pace on the bike that a total of 20 athletes were lapped out during the seven-lap cycle course. James Teagle (11^th) and Christopher Perham (17^th) avoided that fate, but Morgan Davies and George Goodwin were among those caught by the speed at the front of the race.

Silver medallist recently in the British Elite Triathlon Championships in Liverpool, Heather Sellars was Great Britain’s only female athlete racing in Karlovy Vary, and she finished in fourth, less than one minute in arrears of a tight battle for the podium spots, which was won by Yuliya Yelistratova (UKR)
