In a stunning two-person display, Britain's Jessica Learmonth and Sophie Coldwell take European Championship gold and silver after a breakaway from Italy's Alice Betto on the run.

After exiting the swim in the lead, Learmonth lead into T1 and quickly created a solo lead, with Coldwell close behind in a chasing quartet. India Lee was a little further back in a following pack. 

Soon, the gap began to close and Russia's Abrosimova was left behind, leaving Learmonth, Coldwell, Betto and Gorbunova (RUS) fighting for three podium spots as they entered T2. 

From here, it was all down to the Brits, who pushed on and created a gap from the offset. This contiuned to grow until Learmonth put in a decisive final kick and pulled away from her teammate. 

Reigning Champion, India Lee, finished in 15th place.

Learmonth said: "I never expected to be European Champion when I started in triathlon but wow, I'm delighted!

"It was great riding and running with Sophie and to get a GB 1-2 is just amazing, and India made some tactical decisions which helped us."

Brendan Purcell, British Triathlon Performance Director, said: "It's been a fantatstic day in Kitzbuhel. Firstly with the paratriathletes collecting an unprecendented number of medals between them, and then Kate Waugh picking up gold in the Junior Women's race.

"Jess and Sophie worked superbly well together, showed their great strength on the bike and ran well. The future is looking bright for both of them, it's a brilliant result and we're very pleased."
