Sprinters go head-to-head in St Neots

Published:

This weekend sees an opportunity for Age-Group athletes to win national triathlon titles. Regatta Meadow, St Neots will host the British Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships on Sunday (10 May), with athletes from teenagers to over eighties competing on the same course for national medals.

The tried-and-tested course sees the swim route takes triathletes through the river Ouse in the Cambridgeshire countryside; a 750m out and back course where triathletes will have the aim of getting a good position going into the first transition.

Once on the bike, competitors face a 25km undulating course travelling through scenic nearby villages. With smooth roads and the final five miles being downhill, it’s likely to be a fast ride into the second transition.

The two-lap 5km run will take athletes around the Riverside Park. Looping past the finish area on lap one, it gives supporters the opportunity to give competitors that final boost to the line.

Those seeking to retain their titles from 2014 include Rachel Hallam. Competing again in the W30-34 race, she will look to repeat her impressive 78 second victory margin when she lines up on Sunday.

Organised by NiceTri Events, the race marks the second of four British Age-Group Championships this season, with the next opportunity to take a British title at the British Middle Distance Triathlon Championships in Bala on June 7. The final chance will be in Liverpool on July 26 for the British Standard Distance Triathlon Championships. For more details, visit here.

In an additional incentive to give it their all come Sunday morning, age-groupers will be battling for the first spots on two Great Britain Age-Group Teams. The race acts as a qualifier for both the 2015 ITU Sprint Distance Triathlon World Championships in Chicago and the Lisbon 2016 ETU Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships. There will live timing hosted at the event to allow friends and family to follow progress as the race unfolds. It can be accessed here on Sunday from 8:00am.
