Southampton Triathlon Club's Tim Wilks Day.

Published:

Tim Wilks was a big part of Southampton Triathlon Club and the club celebrate his contribution to Triathlon with a special day. Here is how it went.

Southampton Tri Club formed in 1987 – the triathlon early years! We run a multitude of training sessions each week (7+) providing a high standard of coaching and value for money to support our member’s training and competitive aspirations, whether this is for a first Sprint race or full on Kona onslaught. We cater for all abilities within a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, with members coming from many different sporting  backgrounds to join STC.

Twice a year STC organises a training event for our members in memory of one of our friends who tragically passed away whilst competing in a local Tri at Bucklers Hard in 2010. Tim Wilks was a man full of excitement for all things STC and tri so we like to think he’d enjoy being remembered in this way – Tim Wilks Day was born!

We held our first TWD in 2011 and have since run this bi-annually; in March as a pre-season warm up and in October as a cool down from a busy season. The event is organised as a Sprint Tri, but with multiple locations!

We hold a swim session at the Quays pool complex in Southampton every Saturday morning, an ideal start point. For our TWD event, we organise 400m timed swims with specific start times for each competitor and time keepers recording 50m splits.
Once all swims are complete we head out to Lyndhurst to our favoured 10mile TT course; the P164C between Lyndhurst and Beulieu. Each rider is set off as per a normal TT; at 1 minute intervals, but in a graded order, slowest first, fastest last to add to the friendly competition.
The run section is organised around a 4km gravel track loop in Deer Leap Enclosure at Ashurst. All runners are started together en mass and finish as fast as possible because we then head to the pub for lunch and results!

Organising events in the Spring and Autumn is a dangerous game to play however for our recent second event we were very lucky with the weather, with dry roads and favourable breeze allowing some fast TT times to be recorded.

In total we had 26 STC members compete in all disciplines with some more dropping in and out as is allowed for such an informal event. We also publish the results year on year so that individuals can track their own progress against their own goals. The marshals and timekeepers are made up of volunteers and committee members, helping the day to run smoothly.

Southampton Tri Club are always open to new members joining us and we have much more to offer than our training events. See www.southamptontriclub.co.uk for more details.
