Belvoir Castle hosts British Middle Distance Championships

Published:

The British Age-Group Middle Distance Championships take place at the stunning Belvoir Castle this weekend in Leicestershire. National titles will be decided over a 1900 metre swim, 74 kilometre bike and 20km run at the Beaver Triathlon.

With a slightly shorter course than standard, fast times are expected. Last year’s Beaver Triathlon winner, Sam Baxter, finished in an impressive 3 hours 49:24 and Lou Collins won the women’s event in 4 hours 14:54.

Scottish former professional long distance triathlete, Scott Neyedli features in the 35-39 Age Group and will face a challenge from Leicestershire professional, Craig Twigg in the 40-44 Age Group.

The women’s field looks to be wide open, with some regular British Age-Group team members going up against triathletes from all over Britain. With last minute entries having been accepted, the full strength of the field will unfold when the race starts at 8am on Saturday morning.

She commented: “I’m aiming for a time under five hours this time. It may be ambitious but we’ll see how it goes! I really love the course, it’s challenging but has some long time trial straights and although the uphill on the run is tough, I really like the downhill afterwards.”

The course features a two lap swim in castle grounds followed by a very scenic bike ride around quiet roads that are regularly used by local cycling and triathlon clubs. With a few challenging climbs, the open sections of the course can be prone to wind.

The run covers four laps within the grounds and includes a notorious short sharp hill, ensuring that winners of the 2013 Middle Distance national titles have proven themselves over a challenging course.

A course preview is available here. The event starts at 8am on Saturday 8 June.
