Ellis and Pollard, Cashmore, and Pallant-Browne all come away with gold

Dave Ellis and Luke Pollard, Claire Cashmore and Emma Pallant-Browne all stood on the top step of the podium on a weekend that saw 26 British triathletes and paratriathletes in action.

World Triathlon Para Series Yokohama

Ellis and Pollard got their 2024 season underway in Japan claiming the gold medal by almost a minute in the men’s PTVI race, with France’s Thibaut Rigaudeau and his guide in second. Fellow Brit Oscar Kelly, guided by Jack Hutchens, was fourth behind American Owen Cravens and his guide. 

A mix up on the run course, with Canada’s Kamylle Frenette missing the finish chute, saw Claire Cashmore capitalise to take the win in the women’s PTS5 race.  

Michael Taylor was also in action as he finished sixth in the men’s PTS4 race.

World Triathlon Championship Series Yokohama

Kate Waugh was the highest placed Brit in the opening round of the World Triathlon Championship Series as she finished 10th. Vicky Holland followed her over the line in 18th with Oliva Mathias coming 40th. Sian Rainsley who had an issue with the chain on her bike recorded a DNF.  

The men’s race saw Jonny Brownlee finish 38th with Hugo Milner just behind in 39th.

Europe Triathlon Cup Caorle

At Europe Triathlon Cup Caorle, Marcus Dey led proceedings after the 750m swim with Cameron Main in fifth. The third Brit in the race, Hamish Reily, was a further 13 seconds back. Dey and Main dropped back on the bike though as they fell out of medal contention with Reily closing the gap. On the run Main became the lead Brit to cross the line in 13th with Dey coming 16th. Reily was a DNF on the run.  

In the women’s race again a Brit led the way out the water as Bethany Cook set the pace early on, with Sophia Green behind her in third. The pair dropped back over the bike leg and while Cook put in a top-ten run leg to finish 19th, Green continued to drop back and finished 38th.  

IRONMAN 70.3 Mallorca

Emma Pallant-Browne put in a stunning run time to claim gold at IRONMAN 70.3 Mallorca. She was ninth out of the water and fourth amongst the Brits in the race, with Stephanie Clutterbuck finishing the swim in fifth as the lead Brit.  

Pallant-Browne put in a quick T1 before the second fastest bike leg behind German Laura Phillipp to put herself in medal contention on the run. Her run was then over two and a half minutes faster than her German counterpart as she claimed the win by 15 seconds.  

Lizzie Rayner was the next British triathlete over the line finishing fifth, with Clutterbuck completing the top-ten in tenth. Laura Addie was a DNF dropping out on the bike. 

In the men’s race James Teagle put in the fastest run time of the race by almost three minutes to race his way through the field to finish sixth. George Goodwin also put in strong run to finish 11th. Liam Lloyd was 16th and the final Brit to cross the finish line in Spain.  

2024 Challenge Cesenatico

Abigail Bedwell led the way in Italy as she exited the water with a 23 second lead to Italy’s Marta Bernardi, who later recorded a DNF. The Brit dropped behind her podium rivals on the bike and despite a fourth fastest run time, she couldn’t make it onto the podium finishing fourth, over three minutes clear of Hungary’s Gabrielle Zelinka in fifth. Natalie Lawrence was next over the line as she finished the day in sixth.  

The men’s race saw Jamie Bedwell run his way to a seventh-place finish after he lost ground on the bike leg. James Scott-Farrington recorded a DNF after dropping out following the bike leg.
