European champions ready to race at Tata Steel British Paratriathlon Championships

Published:

The Tata Steel British Paratriathlon Championships are set to take place this weekend with reigning European champions, Jane Egan, Faye McClelland, Charlotte Ellis and Iain Dawson all racing to win the coveted British titles in Nottingham on Saturday 26 May 2012.

The event is the third of eight British Championships in 2012 and will see athletes race in the iconic triathlon venue at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham. Athletes will embark on a fast 750m swim before a four-lap 20km bike around the regatta lake and final 5.6km run, before finishing in front of the packed grandstands at Holme Pierrepont.

This year’s event will once again have an exciting mix of elite athletes alongside newcomers to paratriathlon, due to the natural growth of this exciting sport after its successful inclusion in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Each of the recently crowned European champions from Eilat will be in action, alongside many well-known athletes from the British Paratriathlon Performance Programme’s podium and affiliate squads. Each competitor will be aiming to deliver a top performance, as the event is part of the qualifying criteria for selection onto the GE Great Britain Paratriathlon Team for the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in October.

Steven Judge, the reigning British champion in the Tri 3 category will also be in action and is looking forward to racing: “I’m feeling on good form and prepared to defend my title against the field although anything can happen in triathlon. The turn in weather is a complete blessing and should turn out to be a great event with plenty of crowds. I’m looking forward to it and although nerves are there I feel they will do me good to concentrate and focus on the task ahead.”

“Tata Steel is the Corporate Partner of British Triathlon and has supported the growth and development of paratriathlon since 2006. We are delighted to again be supporting the British Paratriathlon Championships - this is the fifth consecutive year that we have done so,” said Tata Steel spokeswoman, Rachel Cox. “Thanks to British Triathlon leading the way with the development and promotion of paratriathlon, the sport now has world-wide recognition and will become a Paralympic sport in Rio 2016. Tata Steel is proud to have contributed to this great achievement.”

Jonathon Riall, Paratriathlon Performance Manager at British Triathlon is looking forward to this year’s event commenting: “This year’s event promises to be the most memorable yet, thanks to Tata Steel’s continued support for the fifth successive year. The event has a great start list with all reigning world and European champions in action, and I am sure we will see some exciting racing as athletes try to impress ahead of the world championships in Auckland later this year.”
