Great Britain Age-Group Team ready for ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships

Published:

A small but dedicated Great Britain Age-Group Team travel to Cogne in Italy this weekend as they compete at the 2013 Cogne ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships.

The event involves a 6km run, 12km mountain bike, and 9km cross-country ski, although the nature of winter triathlon means final distances will be set on the day taking account of the snow conditions.

The eight strong Great Britain Age-Group Team will include three athletes who delivered medal-winning performances at last year’s ETU European Championships. European Champion, Kelley Hanvier (35-39) and silver medallists Sarah Thomas (35-39) and Richard Gentry (25-29) will all be on the start line in Italy.

Kelley Hanvier was looking forward to racing commenting: “It's only my second time doing this sport but following last year’s European championships I am thoroughly looking forward to the challenge and eventually finding a sport I have the honour of representing GB in! Having some friends there in the same race makes it all the better to.”

Richard Gentry added: "Having competed for GB at the 2012 ITU Winter Triathlon European Championships where I finished runner up in my age-group, I'm hoping to go one better at this years World Championships.

"Spending the majority of the winter on snow competing in Nordic Biathlon I'm feeling good for the final stage, am happy with my run speed and will look to hold it together through the mountain bike."

Malcolm Westwood, British Triathlon Director for Age-Group Teams commented: “This is the first major championships of the season for the Great Britain Age-Group Team and I am sure with a number of experienced athletes competing in Italy, we will get off to a great start.”
