Junior and U23 athletes selected for ITU World Championships

British Triathlon has confirmed junior and under 23 athletes for the ITU World Championships in Mexico next month, including Team GB Olympic triathlete, Gordon Benson.

As the Olympic races take place in Rio tomorrow and Saturday, the next generation of triathletes is working towards success in Tokyo and beyond. The Under 23 team will be lead by Benson, who has already won world championship medals, including gold in the Mixed Relay in 2014.

Other previous medal winners include Grant Sheldon, the recent winner of the World University title and Georgia Taylor Brown. Sophie Coldwell was also part of the medal winning relay squad in 2014.

Britain’s junior team includes some of the brightest prospects in the sport, including Alex Yee, 18, who won the ITU World Duathlon title earlier this summer and ran 13:52 for 5000m on the track at the IAAF World Championships in July, the fastest time by an under 20 year old for 25 years.

Along with Yee there’s Ben Dijkstra, 17, the Youth Olympics champion from 2014 and Sam Dickinson, 19, European Championships silver medal winner. Sian Rainsley, 19, was another Youth Olympics medal winner; Kate Waugh, 17, won silver at the World Duathlon Championships and Olivia Mathias, 17, won the last ETU European Cup event that she took part in last month.

The junior and U23 events take place alongside the senior race to crown the ITU World Champions and the amateur events, which feature the hugely successful British Age-Group team.
