Liverpool set for biggest ever British Triathlon Championships

Published:

Liverpool will provide the stage for national triathlon titles to be decided on Saturday. Elite youth, junior, senior paratriathlon athletes will compete in and around the Liverpool docks and iconic city centre alongside amateur athletes competing in various age categories from 18-80.

This is the first time that there has been a combined national championship event with everyone racing together on one spectacular day of triathlon.

A swim in Queen's and Wapping Docks will be followed by a closed-roads city centre cycle ride and a run around Liverpool docks, including running past the Echo Arena and the Royal Liver Building.

The action starts with Age-Group racing from 7.30am over the standard distance (1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run). As well as Age-Group national titles being available, this is the final opportunity to qualify for the British Age-Group team for the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final London, 11-15 September.

So far this year competition for Age-Group slots in London has been fierce. This weekend will decide the final slots in the team.

The Paratriathlon follows at 11am with the largest field ever assembled in Britain. The field includes all five of Britain’s current ITU world champions.

The elite races feature the best youth and junior athletes in the country as well as seniors fighting for sprint distance national titles and British Triathlon Super Series points. The Youth races at 12.30pm feature athletes aspiring to go to the 2020 Olympic Games and are starting out in their careers. They will appreciate the support of spectators and are quickly followed by the junior and senior elite races at 2.40 (female) and 3.40pm (male).

Britain’s Emma Pallant from Aldershot is arguably the favourite for the senior women’s race over 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. The former elite runner currently leads the British Triathlon Super Series having won in Windsor and finished second in Blenheim. However, she will need to run down the stronger swimmers in the field to set up an exciting race.

The men’s race features Australian, Brendan Sexton, who raced in Hyde Park as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games triathlon. He will battle with his own team mate, Aaron Royle, the Under 23 World Champion, but Britain’s Harry Wiltshire and Marc Austin will no doubt feature a fast and competitive race.

All of the events are free to view and will offer a fantastic spectacle for spectators.
