Liverpool showed Rio spirit as age-groupers chased British titles

Published:

Tri Liverpool took over the iconic City Centre today, Sunday 14 August, with nearly 1,500 age-group athletes competing across sprint and standard distance races.

Championship titles were on offer over the standard distance, with many athletes also aiming to qualify for next year’s ITU Standard Distance Triathlon World Championships.

First to cross the finish line was Brett Halliwell of Kingswood Tri Club. After the race Brett said “To come away with the British Triathlon Championship title in the 20-24 age-group, I’m over the moon with it. I came here with the aim of qualifying for the ETU European Triathlon Championships in Kitzbuhel next year, so to win the title as well was a real bonus.”

Brett was however beaten overall into fifth place, with Richard Ebbage of the Royal Marines Triathlon Club taking the victory in a blistering time of 1:54:29.

The women’s field was hotly contested, with a fantastic display across the age-groups.

The fastest woman on the day was also our first female finisher, 20-24 age-group Alice Jenkins from Hartree JETS. On her win Alice said “It’s my third year competing in Liverpool so I know the event well. The first year I took part was during the first year I started racing, so I was on not even clip in pedals, but I’ve upgraded since then.” Alice finished in a time of 2:04:12, ahead of second placed Hannah Howitt and third placed Emily Whitmore.

There were also a number of open sprint distance waves as part of the Tri Liverpool event. Quickest competitor of the day in the women’s field was Maria Powell, who won by a margin of over four minutes to finish in 1:13:28. The men’s sprint distance event was won by local lad James Muscart of Mersey Tri, who completed the 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run in a time of 1:07:10.
