Llandudno concludes Age-Group sprint qualification

Published:

Saturday’s Llandudno Sea Triathlon provided the final opportunity to qualify in the sprint distance event at the World Triathlon Grand Final London, 11-15 September in Hyde Park.

Exceptionally high standards have been seen at every qualification event so far, and this one was no exception with close racing over the challenging climbs of the Great Orme in particular.

The 750m sea swim provided a scenic start to the race, followed by 19 kilometres of tough cycling around the north Wales coast. The finish line was along the Victorian Promenade following the run section, and saw the top finishers book their slots for London in September.

Chris Standidge was first across the line in the men’s race, holding off the fast finishing Nick Bundle and Jon Fletcher with a time of 1:05:08. Top woman was Nicola Boyd by a margin over a minute from Linda Evans.

Over 1000 athletes aged 16 to 80 will make up the British Age Group team in London. Each will have the unique opportunity to compete in national colours for their country at the London 2012 Olympic venue.

The team will be finalised following the British Triathlon Championships Liverpool on 13 July. Roll down slots will become available to finishers at the sprint qualification events if athletes also qualify over the standard distance and opt to compete in the longer distance event in London.
