Morpeth Duathlon concludes World Duathlon qualification

Morpeth Duathlon took place last weekend on Sunday 6 April providing duathletes with a final opportunity to qualify for the ITU Sprint Duathlon World Championships.

The race completed qualification for the 2014 Pontevedra ITU Sprint Distance Duathlon World Championships and saw duathletes race through Morpeth town centre and the surrounding Northumberland countryside. 
 
The overall winner was Luke Grenfell-Shaw (20-24) of Durham University who completed the 5.15km run, 26km bike and 3.8km run in a time of 01:13.04. Harry Walker (45-49) finished close behind the winner completing the course in 01:13.55. In third place overall was Carl Avery (25-29), with a time of 01:14.25.
 
Sophie Wickham (25-29) of Tyne Triathlon Club was the fastest female duathlete at Morpeth completing the course in 01:24.37. Team mate, Paula Foley (25-29) completed a Tyne Triathlon one-two finishing second overall with a time of 01:27.05. Angela McGurk (30-34) finished very strongly on the final run to come home in third place crossing the line in 01:30.25.
 
For duathletes who missed the chance to qualify for the ITU Sprint Duathlon World Championships, the Stockton Duathlon Festival (27 April) provides one further opportunity to make the team for the 2014 Standard Distance Duathlon World Championships. Stockton also provides the first chance to qualify for the 2015 ETU Sprint Distance Duathlon European Championships, which has two additional qualification events at Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon (5 October) and Althorp Duathlon (18 October).
