British Champions set to race in ETU Powerman Long Distance and Sprint Duathlon European Championships

Published:

The GE Great Britain Team for the ETU Powerman Long Distance and Sprint Duathlon European Championships (29 April) has been confirmed with three elite British Champions travelling to the Netherlands.

Recent winner of the British Elite Duathlon Championships, Lucy Gossage is named to the elite squad alongside Matt Moorhouse, a member of the 2012 British Triathlon Multisport Squad. Both athletes will compete in the long distance duathlon event that involves a 15km opening run, 60km bike and final 7.5km run.

Lucy was delighted with her selection commenting: "I hadn't factored a long distance duathlon into my race season but am extremely excited at the opportunity having been selected! My employers, Cancer Research UK, have been extremely supportive in allowing me to work part time this year, which gives me much more flexibility to race more frequently. It will be my first long distance duathlon so I have no particular expectations - but can guarantee I'll give it everything I have and will certainly try and enjoy it!"

In the sprint distance duathlon event, two Junior British Champions from Prestwold will compete in the elite races with George Schwiening and Richard Horton both selected to the GE Great Britain Team. Both athletes finished in third place overall in British Elite Duathlon Championships as well as winning the junior races, and will be keen to replicate those performances in Horst.

Calum Johnson a member of the North West GE Regional Talent Academy and Liam Lloyd a member of the Welsh Triathlon Development Squad, who finished second and third respectively behind Richard in the British Junior Duathlon Championships complete the GE Great Britain Team.

Alongside the elites, British Triathlon will also be sending a GE Great Britain Age-Group Team that includes 33 athletes racing in the sprint distance event and 25 athletes racing the long distance duathlon course.

In the long distance duathlon race, the GE Great Britain Age-Group Team includes 2011 ETU Standard Distance Duathlon European and World champion, Hilary Ross (55-59). Two silver medallists from the 2011 ETU Standard Distance Duathlon European Championships, Peter Wheddon (55-59) and Claire Jackson (50-54) will also be on the start line in Horst.

In the sprint distance race, there will be three reigning ITU Sprint Distance Duathlon World champions from 2011 competing including, Rachel Lightfoot (40-44), Dave Littlemore (60-64) and Edward Snelling (65-69).

The sprint distance duathlon event will include a 5km run, 20km bike and final 2.5km run for both age-group and elite competitors.

Elsewhere this weekend, elite athlete Harry Wiltshire will be competing in the 2012 Fuzhou ITU Triathlon Premium Asian Cup.
