Dambuster Duathlon celebrates first British Champions of the year

Published:

The British Duathlon Championships took place at the Dambuster Duathlon last weekend on Saturday 9 March offering athletes the first chance of winning British titles in the 2013 season.

In the men’s race, Hugh Mackenzie crossed the line first in a provisional time of 1:54.12. The overall win was at the third time of asking for the Londoner, after Hugh finished in third place in 2012 and second in 2011.

Hugh commented after his victory: “The race was really good. I like a good bike course, and this course has a particularly hard bike course, so it suits me quite well. There were a few very quick runners on the first run but I managed to take them on the bike course and built up a lead and hung onto it for the second run.”

Phil Holland finished in second place, with a provisional time of 1:54.41, with Daniel Jenkin in third place crossing the line in 1:55.02.

In the women’s race, it was a second successive overall victory for Anna Turvey, as the Newcastle based athlete crossed the line with a provisional time of 2:06.49.

Amy commented: “It went really well, obviously because I won, which is always a good thing. It was tough, but I enjoyed it and was really pleased with it. I never expect to win duathlons, because there are some really good runners in it, but luckily my bike strength managed to do it for me and it’s great to win.”

Ruth Brennan Morrey finished in second place with a provisional time of 2:10.14, whilst last year’s runner up, Amy Forshaw finished in third place with 2:10.37.

The event was the first of four British Age-Group Championships in 2013 was also the first of three qualifiers for the Great Britain Age-Group Team at the 2013 Ottawa ITU Duathlon World Championships in August. Clumber Park Duathlon on 23 March is the second qualification opportunity before the final qualifier on 14 April at the Cambridge Duathlon.

The event was being organised by Pace Setter events, with more information available on www.pacesetterevents.com
