Belgian athletes make use of home soil advantage to take the victories in Wuustwezel.

Sunday’s ETU Sprint Triathlon European Cup in Wuustwezel, Belgium, had a familiar look on the top step of the podium, as home athlete Marten Van Riel added to his win a week earlier in Malmö, Sweden. To make it a win-double for the Belgian athletes, Valerie Bathelemy secured her first ever ETU European Cup victory.

The leading British athlete on the day was Liam Lloyd, who crossed the line in sixth position after producing the second fastest run split. Liam will be hoping to qualify for the Welsh Commonwealth Games team once again, having raced in the Mixed Relay event at Glasgow 2014.

A week after running for Great Britain in the IAAF World Championships over 10,000m in London, Beth Potter was racing in her first international triathlon. Despite her busy schedule, the fastest run split of the day by a full 50 seconds earned her 11th place at the finish. Still very early in her triathlon career, she will be hoping to follow the success of Non Stanford, among others, who have successfully made the transition from elite runner to international triathlete.
