Over 1,500 triathletes sign up for Liverpool

The British Triathlon Championships Liverpool boasts record entry numbers after only one month of opening with over 1,500 people signing up to date.

In addition to the individual competition, British Triathlon is encouraging local businesses, clubs and friends to come together for the triathlon team relay event.  All four team members will need to complete a 350m swim, 5km bike and 1.25km run – this really is achievable for people who have never even thought about doing a triathlon before.

Stuart Hayes, a member of Team GB from London 2012, has confirmed he will be racing in the British Elite Sprint Triathlon Championships as part of the British Triathlon Championships Liverpool weekend. Triathletes from around Great Britain are flocking to Liverpool on 13 / 14 July this year and it is hoped that the presence of one of Team GB’s Olympic athletes will inspire the people of Liverpool to try out the sport in a new triathlon team relay race on Sunday 14 July.

The British Triathlon Championships Liverpool will be held right in the heart of the city and take in some of Liverpool’s most iconic sights including the Albert Dock, Echo Arena and the Liver Building. The event will see 1000s of triathletes travel from around the UK to enjoy Liverpool for the weekend. The event is being organised by Upsolut Sports UK and British Triathlon.

Stuart Hayes said: “I am looking forward to returning to racing in the UK. The British Triathlon Championships Liverpool will be a fantastic event, with elite, age-group, and paratriathlon racing and I hope will inspire the people of Liverpool to enter their first triathlon especially with the relay. This is a fantastic sport that I believe anyone can take part in – good luck to all the newcomers!”

Ian Braid, British Triathlon Director for Major and National Events, said: “Liverpool will provide an iconic backdrop to the British Triathlon Championships and with Stuart Hayes confirmed on the start list, we are looking forward to seeing a world-class field competing. Alongside the elite races, we hope to inspire the local community to take up the triathlon challenge, especially with a triathlon team relay event, which is a perfect opportunity to take part for novices.”

Robert Puestow, Managing Director, Upsolut Sports UK said: “It is fantastic to have an athlete of Stuart Hayes’ calibre competing in the British Triathlon Championships Liverpool. When the top athletes take part in events like this, it is an inspiration for people to try out triathlon, a sport which continues to grow across the UK.”

Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “This event is going to be a major highlight in the city’s sporting calendar and it is testament to its quality that an Olympian is taking part. It’s no surprise that the number of participants is already at record breaking levels as taking part in an event of this calibre with the backdrop of our world famous waterfront is a real pull for triathletes of all abilities.”
