The format in Chengdu involved sprint-distance heats yesterday followed by a super-sprint distance final today. All of Britain’s women made it comfortably through to the final, although Vicky Holland was unable to start due to having a sore calf muscle.

Stanford came through the 400m swim, 10.2km bike and 2.5 km run faster than the rest of the field, including navigating a crash in the second transition where several athletes found themselves on the carpet in a mass of bikes and bodies.

Gordon Benson and Ben Dijkstra both made the men’s final and Liam Lloyd won the B final. This was Dijkstra’s first major senior event, and his focus still being on junior racing this year.

The Chengdu race provided a perfect stopping-off point on the way to the ITU World Series race in Yokohama next weekend.
