Tri Liverpool on track for sell-out event

Published:

Tri Liverpool, the city-centre triathlon event coming to Liverpool on Sunday, August 14 2016, has sold out of standard distance entries in record time.

The spectacular sporting event, which takes in some of Liverpool’s most breathtaking tourist attractions along the route, has sold over 1000 places in its standard distance - the longest and toughest course at Tri Liverpool.

Speaking about the record number of entries, CEO of British Triathlon, Jack Buckner, said:

“The popularity of triathlon in Liverpool continues to build, year on year. With over four months to go until the race, we are reminding people not to leave it too late to enter the other distance categories or risk being disappointed. We are estimating the whole event to sell out well ahead of the entry deadline in July.

“Our standard distance is always our most popular course, acting as a British Championship race with the added bonus of participants having the opportunity to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team for the ETU Standard Distance Triathlon European Championships in Kitzbuhuel, Austria next year.”

Triathletes looking to enter Tri Liverpool can still get the chance to swim, cycle and run the iconic waterfront course via the remaining distance categories. The sprint distance will see entrants tackle a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run, with the same course length used for the three-person relay event. Those looking to tackle a shorter distance for the first time can dive into the specially created GO TRI+ beginner wave; a 400m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run on the dedicated course for novice triathletes.

Liverpool City Council continues to work with British Triathlon to make the sport more accessible. In 2015, over 45% of local people who took part in Tri Liverpool were first timers with special GO TRI training sessions across the city and free open water swim training cited as successful motivators.

In 2016, Liverpool City Council continues to offer 10 GO TRI training sessions per week at Lifestyles Centres in Garston, Ellergreen, Peter Lloyd and Wavertree Aquatics Centre, allowing entrants to feel race ready and confident ahead of Tri Liverpool in August. Upcoming dates for free open water swim training sessions at Kings Dock, delivered in partnership with Liverpool’s triathlon club, Mersey Tri, will also be announced shortly.

Wendy Simon, cabinet member for culture, tourism and events said:

“Tri Liverpool is one the most popular events in the British Triathlon race calendar and an exhilarating sporting day out for competitors and spectators alike. The triathlon community comes together in Liverpool from world-class elite athletes to home-grown beginners in a very inclusive, friendly and supportive atmosphere. With the standard distance already full with over four months to go, we are definitely on track to make 2016 the best Tri Liverpool yet.”

Tri Liverpool has gained national recognition for its urban city-centre course, that participants will swim, cycle and run past some of the city’s most famous Waterfront Liverpool landmarks, including Albert Dock and Pier Head, with an iconic indoor transition within Echo Arena.
