60-seconds with the Great Britain Age-Group Team

Published:

In a series of features looking at the athletes that make up the Great Britain Age-Group Team, British Triathlon spoke to Jonathan Yeates about his experiences at the ETU Triathlon Age Group European Championships in Alanya, Turkey.

The Great Britain Age Group Team won an impressive 95 medals at the. Yeates won a bronze medal in the 20-24 years standrad distance race. He also provided us with a few behind the scenes images of the event.

Where and when did you qualify for the British Age Group team for the Europeans?
Strathcylde in Spetember 2012 (it was changed to a Duathlon due to the blue-green algae in the water water)

Have you been part of the team before?
Yes I went to the World Duathlons in Nancy last year.

What’s your best achievement to date?
Winning Bronze in 20-24 Age-Group at the 2013 Europeans in Turkey was so unexpected. My run took me from 8th to 3rd and I had no idea where I was until it was announced after I had crossed the finish line. That medal will take some beating!

How did you get into triathlon?
I use to live and work at Rutland Water and after being the lead kayaker for the Dambuster and Vitruvian Triathlon, Mark Shaw at Pacesetter Events asked me if would I like to give it a go. I did the Dambuster in 2009 and I have been training ever since.

What’s your sporting background?
Bit of everything, rugby, watersports, mountain biking but nothing in particular. I use to jog all the time but training didn't get serious till I went to University.

What’s your main strength in triathlon?
My running. But I want to be able to say in the future that they are all as strong as one another, but first I need to swim a lot more.

How do you feel about being part of the British Age Group team?
Racing as part of the British Age Group team is an amazing experience. To be able to wear GB kit and represent your country is very special and few have the privilege to do it. Plus the competition for places is getting even tougher. The reason I think we do so well is that often the Qualifiers and the British Championships are just as tough as the Euro and World races themselves. It makes us a very strong nation to compete against and gives you great confidence going into these Championships.

What’s your job?
I work for the Local Government Association in London. I am a graduate management trainee and some of my work involves supporting the improvement of sports leadership and programmes throughout the country. This I really enjoy.

Club?
Durham Unversity Triathlon Club

What’s your ultimate goal in triathlon?
Tough question but I suppose like most athletes I would like to be able to finish a race and say that race went perfectly. It will probably never happen but the closer I can get to it the better.
