Eton Dorney welcomes British Sprint Triathlon Championships

Published:

The British Sprint Triathlon Championships take place at the Eton Sprints this Saturday 17 May 2014 with a field of over 700 competitors all racing to win the first British age-group titles of the season.

The event will see triathletes race at the iconic London 2012 Olympic Rowing venue of Dorney Lake, a location that is well known as one of the fastest courses around. Competitors will begin with a 750m swim in the clear waters of Eton Dorney, before embarking on 21.2km bike around the regatta lake. The bike course is relatively flat, which will leave no time for athletes to take it easy before they enter T2 and head out onto a 5km sprint for the finish line.

All of this season’s British Age-Group Championships will be hosting live timing for competitors’ friends and family to follow their progress throughout the event. Live timing for Eton Dorney will be available on www.britishtriathlon.org from the first wave start time of 08:40am.

The event is the first of four British Age-Group Championships this season with the next opportunity to win a coveted British title at the British Triathlon Championships in Liverpool on 10 August, followed by the British Middle Distance Championships in Aberfeldy on 17 August and finally the British Duathlon Championships at Emberton Country Park on 12 October.

David Bartlett a current British Champion (25-29 age-group) from Cornwall who competes in the 30-34 age-group this season is looking forward to the race commenting: “For the fifth consecutive year, I am looking forward to competing in the British Sprint Triathlon Championships.  Competing in these Championships provides one of the highest levels of age-group competition every year and is worth the travel time from Cornwall, especially this year as I travel as defending champion.

“This year Dorney Lake will offer one of the safest and fastest race venues in the UK.  I know Eton Dorney is already an established triathlon venue for all abilities and allows for greater numbers of competitors within a spectator friendly environment.”

Nick Rusling, Human Race CEO added: “It’s really exciting to host the first British Age-Group Championships of the season and here at Human Race we can’t wait to welcome some of the top age-group athletes in Great Britain to our event. Eton Dorney has a history of hosting iconic triathlon events including the British Triathlon U20’s Festival last year - which was a huge success - and we will aim to deliver a unforgettable event for competitors and spectators alike.”

Jon Ridgeon, British Triathlon Director for Major and National Events is looking forward to the event, commenting: “Eton Dorney is a fantastic venue to begin our 2014 British Age-Group Championships season and will provide a real test for competitors. To take part in any of our British Championships is always a memorable occasion and Saturday I expect to be no different. This year we also have live timing available on www.britishtriathlon.org enabling the triathlon community to more easily follow every bit of the action – don’t miss it.”

The event is being organised by Human Race events, with more information available on http://humanrace.co.uk/
