Learmonth and Hall double up for Gran Canaria Success

Published:

Jessica Learmonth achieved her first win of the 2017 season at the Gran Canaria ETU European Cup race yesterday. She and Lucy Hall broke away over the Olympic distance course, and finished first and second. Sain Rainsley and Gordon Benson also finished in the top ten.

Reversing the result from last month, where Lucy Hall outsprinted Learmonth for the win at the ITU World Cup in Cape Town, Learmonth broke away on the final bike lap this time. She gave herself an advantage at the start of the 10km run, and then achieved the fastest run time of the day to secure gold by a comfortable margin. She said she was 'delighed to take the win.'

Hall was happy to take silver this time, commenting on Twitter that she was ‘chuffed to be on the podium with Jess Learmonth again.’ Sian Raisley, 19, was seventh, an impressive performance in her first ever standard distance race.

Gordon Benson was the top British man, finishing seventh. He commented afterwards that he ‘enjoyed being back in the mix today, but a little flat at the sharp end on the run.’ He will race again next weekend in Quarteria, Portugal along with another large British squad. Douglas Roberts finished just outside the top ten in eleventh place.
