Lucy Gossage dominated the race from start to finish and despite a late challenge from Sweden’s Eva Nystrom, a delighted Lucy crossed the line over a minute ahead of hear nearest rival.

 

The two-time champion and member of British Triathlon’s Elite Multisport squad commented: “I'm very pleased. It was a tough battle with Eva once again! I stuck to my race plan and I was pleased that I coped with the pressure of being defending champion! It was a great race.”

 

 

 

Lucy wasn’t the only Elite Multisport Squad member to repeat their 2012 success as George Schwiening delivered another silver medal in the women’s junior sprint distance race to make it two silvers in two years.

 

She said: “I’m really pleased. This year I went the right way and everything came together, I just lost out on the run but I tried my hardest.”

 

George’s teammates, Kate Curran, a member of the Triathlon England Talent Squad and Leah Peploe also gave impressive performances to finish fourth and fifth respectively.

 

In the men’s junior sprint race, Liam Lloyd improved upon his eighth place finish in 2012, to win a silver medal this year. Liam posted the fastest final run of the day to win his silver medal, commenting:

 

“I felt really strong coming off the bike. I knew there were a few guys behind me and that I needed to keep pushing on. After half way on the final lap I managed to get a break and get into second and I just managed to hold him (Genis Grau) off.”

 

Calum Johnson finished in sixth place, whilst Triathlon England Talent Squad member, Jimmy Kershaw finished in 20th position.

 

In the elite men’s race, two Elite Multisport Squad athletes Oliver Mott finished in fourth place and Matt Moorhouse finished in 11th place.

 

Alongside the elite athletes, the Great Britain Age-Group Team celebrated a provisional 14 gold, eight silver and ten bronze medals across long distance and sprint distance duathlon events.

 

In the long distance duathlon event, Christopher Dettmar (40-44) won gold improving on his 2012 silver medal winning performance. In the women’s event, Wendy Gooding (50-54) and Elspeth Knott (60-64) both won gold.

 

Carl Ferri (40-44) and Geoff Russell (65-69) added silver medals, whilst Boo Alder (50-54) who recently came to visit British Triathlon’s National Performance Centre in Loughborough after being part of the winning British Airways team in the Canary Wharf Triathlon Challenge won bronze.

 

In the sprint distance event, the Great Britain Age-Group Team had a tremendous haul winning 11 gold medals, six silver and nine bronzed.

 

Barry Johnson, one of two returning medallists in the Great Britain Age-Group Team retained his gold medal won in 2012. Dave Littlemore (60-64) successful achieved his objective of delivering medal-winning performance with silver, sadly unable to repeat his gold medal performance of 2012 due to recent injuries.

 

India Lee in the 25-29 category was the first overall female and Great Britain team member to finish, whilst Alan Murchison (40-44) was the first male Great Britain Age-group team member home.

 

Great Britain Age-Group Team Manager, Joan Lennon was delighted with the racing, commenting: “The weather was perfect here in Horst and the crowds gave great support to all the athletes.

 

“The new Great Britain Age-Group team kit looked good and it will be great to see more athletes racing in it throughout the rest of the season.” 

The long distance duathlon event involved a 15km run, 60km bike and 7.5km run, whilst sprint distance age-group athletes and elite juniors competed over a 5km run, 20km bike and 2.5km run.
