Morpeth Duathlon completes qualification for Pontevedra

Published:

The qualification for the ITU Sprint Duathlon World Championships Great Britain Age-Group Team draws to a close this weekend on Sunday 6 April at Morpeth, providing the final opportunity to qualify for the team.

Morpeth Duathlon is the last qualification event for the 2014 Pontevedra ITU Sprint Distance Duathlon World Championships and will see duathletes race through Morpeth and the surrounding villages with views of the Northumberland countryside.

The opening 5.15km run sees athletes race through the town centre on closed roads, then on a winding route through Carlisle Park. The 26km bike route takes athletes out through the villages of Pigdon and Netherwitton before heading back to Morpeth for the final 3.8km sprint to the finish.

The Great Britain Age-Group Team presents the opportunity for Home Nation members to qualify and compete at international level. Great Britain has a history of success at every international championship in which the team competes. Last year in the ITU Sprint Duathlon World Championships in Ottawa, the team celebrated 7 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze medals.

Malcolm Westwood, British Triathlon Director for Age Group commented: “Competition has been strong again this year with athletes vying for the chance to take part in an ITU Sprint Duathlon World Championships in Europe and aiming to emulate the great medal-winning performances of our previous Great Britain teams. Morpeth is an exciting and challenging venue with fast town centre racing in wonderful Northumbrian countryside and provides a great last-chance opportunity to secure one of the final places in this year’s team. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.”

The deadline to register your intent to qualify at Morpeth Duathlon on www.britishtriathlon.org is 5pm on 4 April 2014.
