Published:

Athletes aspiring aiming to compete in the ITU Aquathlon World Championships will begin their journey to London at the Box End Aquathlon this weekend on 5 May, the first Great Britain Age-Group Team qualification event for Hyde Park.

The Box End Aquathlon begins the qualification process for the ITU World Championships, which will kick-start the action at the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final on Wednesday 11 September 2013. Athletes aiming to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team at this event will need to register their intent on the British Triathlon website by 5pm on Friday 3 May.

The road to London continues on the 19 May at Crosby Lakeside Aquathlon in Merseyside, as the City of Liverpool becomes gripped by multisport fever with the British Triathlon Championships Liverpool on 13 and 14 July on the horizon. The final opportunity to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team will be at the Try It Aquathlon on 25 May.

Great Britain Age-Group Team Manager, Peter Hallatt urged any athletes wanting to qualify to register their interest as soon as possible with British Triathlon. He said: “The ITU Aquathlon World Championships will kick start what will be an iconic event in Hyde Park with a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete at a home World Championships in front of your friends and family.  We want to have our largest ever Great Britain Age-Group Team competing in the aquathlon and get the Great Britain Team off to a winning start.”

Malcolm Westwood, British Triathlon Director for Age-Group Teams added: “The road to London is an exciting one this season with Great Britain Age-Group Teams for aquathlon as well as the sprint and standard distance triathlon, the World Championships will be an unforgettable event for 2013.

“Places are limited for each of the teams so it’s necessary to have a qualification process for the aquathlon too this year, however the event is open to all and the qualification standard is achievable. Aquathlon athletes will enjoy the full experience of competing for Great Britain so we want as many of our inspirational age-group athletes attempting to qualify and to be part of our Great Britain Age-Group Team’s journey to Hyde Park.”
